Cinematic portrait — The Open Journal Studio

The Open Journal Studio

So they'll know you.
Even if they never meet you.

Not your life story. Your life's meaning.

The philosophy

Capturing the invisible threads of a lifetime.

We don't make documentaries; we craft digital heirlooms. Through a quiet, intentional process, we distil the essence of who you are — your values, your humour, your quietest wisdom — into a cinematic experience that will speak to generations you will never meet.

Our work

Every person carries a story worth telling.

Priyesh Pankhania — founder, The Open Journal Studio

The founder

Built on the weight of what remains.

I founded The Open Journal because of a silence. When my mother passed, I realised I had thousands of photographs — but I didn't have her voice telling the stories that made her who she was.

I looked at my daughter and understood I didn't want that silence for her. I wanted her to know her heritage — not through dates on a family tree, but through the warmth of a story told by the person who lived it.

"We are the only ones who can tell our story. If we don't, it vanishes with us. I'm here to make sure it stays." — Pri

The process

Quiet. Intentional. Yours.

01

Discovery

A deep conversation before the cameras go on. We learn who they are, what they care about, and where the real story lives.

02

Filming

Minimal crew, maximum presence. Filmed in the comfort of their home or the places that shaped them.

03

Edit

Precision storytelling. We weave together the spoken word with visual poetry into something worth watching for the rest of your life.

Everything you need to know

A personal documentary is a professionally directed, cinematic film made about a real person — not a promotional video, but a character-driven story told with the craft of documentary filmmaking. Unlike corporate video, it is intended as a lasting record: something to be watched privately, shared with family, and preserved across generations.

Commissions begin from £2,250 for a Core Portrait. Every project is different, so we quote individually after an initial conversation. Payment can be spread across 3 or 6 monthly instalments, and group commissions — for example, siblings splitting the cost — can be arranged.

From first conversation to final delivery, most projects take between 8 and 16 weeks. This includes a pre-production consultation, one or more filming days, and a full edit with review stages.

Yes. Many commissions are gifts — from adult children to ageing parents, from couples as anniversary presents, or from families wanting to capture a grandparent's story. The entire process can be managed confidentially until the gift is revealed.

A corporate video promotes a product, service, or company. A personal documentary is about a person — their character, their story, their life's meaning. It is made to be treasured privately and shared with family, not broadcast as marketing. The craft, tone, and purpose are entirely different.

A full-length film, a 60-minute edit shaped around the strongest story, 2–4 short thematic clips, a personalised private landing page where the whole family can watch and share, and a physical hard drive in a presentation case. Yours. Forever.

The most enduring way is through a professionally directed personal documentary — a proper cinematic film, not a home video. The Open Journal Studio specialises in exactly this: capturing the stories, values, and character of real families in films built to last generations.
